The Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España creates the Celia Barquín Award for the best female amateur golfer
- As a tribute to the once emerging spanish golfer, who was vilely murdered in 2018.
- The amateur players invited to the tournament in 2022, who do not occupy a place in the professionals, are Paula Martín, as champion of España Amateur, Cayetana Fernández and Carla Tejedo, as the best Spanish players available in the Ranking Mundial Amateur.
The Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España, the most important women’s professional tournament held in our country, has created the Celia Barquín Award in order to reward the best amateur player who participates in this prestigious competition every year, which on this occasion will be held at the Alferini Golf course in Malaga between November 24th and 27th.
The Celia Barquín Award is a tribute to the Cantabrian golfer with strong sporting links to the Principality of Asturias Golf Federation, who was vilely murdered by a heartless man in the United States in 2018, only a few weeks after being brilliantly proclaimed European Absolute champion.
The Spanish golfer, who was a regular member of the national teams, continued her sporting career at Iowa State University – where she was studying civil engineering – and was also chosen as Sportswoman of the Year at that academic center.
This Celia Barquín Award is reserved for the best amateur of the tournament. For this purpose, three projection golfers will be invited (without taking the professional´s places) and will also be awarded to the reigning champion of Spain and the two best players in the World Amateur Ranking just two months before the start of the tournament. They will also have the requirement of having Spanish nationality and still being an amateur on the date of celebration of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España.
Based on this standard -for any possible substitution the World Amateur Ranking is still available, the players who are invited to the tournament in 2022 are Paula Martín, as Spanish Amateur champion, Cayetana Fernández and Carla Tejedo, as the best Spanish players who are available in the World Amateur Ranking.
Celia Barquín’s sporting accomplishments
Runner-up in the Spanish Junior Championship in 2006 and Spanish Junior Champion in 2010, Celia Barquín entered the Blume National Golf School in the 2012-2013 promotion, previously endorsed by her first two international victories at the Grand Prix of Chiberta in 2011 and 2012, a victory she also got in 2013.
An outstanding team player, who always showed her undoubted talent, Celia Barquín contributed to winning bronze and silver medals at the 2015 and 2016 European Women’s Team Championships, a prelude to her great individual success on July 28th in 2018, when she was proclaimed brilliant individual European champion.
In the Slovakian course of Penati Golf Club, she won in an outstanding way over all her rivals, getting a title that was previously swelled by the Spanish list of winners Carlota Ciganda (2004 and 2008), Belén Mozo (2006), Luna Sobrón (2014) and María Parra (2015).
